Figured tabbies were commonly woven in French textile manufactures. These fabrics came from two main sources :

First, in regions where sericulture was practiced such as Provence and Languedoc, scraps of silk threads were carefully recuperated and loosely spun into 'filoselle'.

This thread was used to weave fabrics of several different textures such as fleuret, bourrette and imberline. In regions that didn't practice sericulture fibers such as linen, hemp, wool or mohair were used to weave famous 'toiles' such as the toiles d'Abbeville or Riom as well as numerous lesser known fabrics.
